Section 508 Web Accessibility Compliance
Web Accessibility refers to the 1998 Amendment to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act that was added to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. Inaccessible technology interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily.
For website developers and publishers, Section 508 provides guidelines for removing website barrers to those with disabilities. Professional developments should aim to reach all of their potential visitors regardless of ability/disability. Through appropriate use of descriptive text, clear descriptions for all non-text items, style sheet based presentation and accessible navigation, website access can be dramatically improved for those with visual, cognitive, motor and/or hearing disabilities.
